Historically this hasn't always been the case (Paris in the French Wars of Religion was on the ultra-Catholic side), so I'd say that it's more to do with most city jobs requiring a university education, plus the fact that universities not only train for jobs but also try to indoctrinate people into the shitlib worldview. There are various ways to solve this problem

No tribe or community to be kept accountable for. Individuals in cities can act as total degenerates without social repercussions. City living is heavily romanticized. There are tons of movies and TV shows about living in the big city. In reality only people in the financial sector should be living in cities, but everyone wants to live in the city, then they get there and they can't afford it so they vote for the party that says "we'll steal from everyone else to give you the money to live in the city" rather than the party that says "if you can't afford the city consider living elsewhere".

Liberals just reinforce the fantasy land, conservatives want to bring people back to reality. Guess which one people prefer to hear.

Astoundingly wealthy people live just a few blocks from really poor people in segregated bubbles. They see the poor people working their asses to the bone, taking care of their children, bagging groceries, opening doors for them, doing their nails for them, etc, while they relax in air conditioned offices and do little work (especially true of women). So the poor vote democrat for the gibs and stuff while the right vote democrat sort of like out of guilt I imagine to make themselves feel better about being in the upper class. It's also a sort of community thing. If you come out as Republican in the inner cities it's like coming out as gay in the 1950's. It takes a huge toll on your social life and in the inner city, where nepotism is how basically everything works, the death of your social life is a pretty big deal

People in middle America are generally lower middle class and separated by miles in terms of communities, and care very little about what other people think of them. They go to church and do their work and spend time with their families, their families are their social life for the most part. So they don't experience this and even if they did they wouldn't care because they work hard on their farms and at their shitty jobs and don't live and work in skyscrapers with doormen.

Living in a hive makes you an insect.

Brown people move in, shit up the schools and neighborhoods, whites exit.

People in big cities become accustomed to living a more regimented and collectivist way of life. After the crime wave of the late 70s and 80s, city people happily embraced the police state for the safety that it offered.

Plus, most people in a place like New York own nothing at all; they rent their apartments and use taxis and subway trains instead of owning a car. Everything they have is just borrowed until the next person steps up to use it. To the extent that they have any wealth, it's an immaterial stock portfolio that only exists as numbers in a computer somewhere. Tax them, and they lose nothing that wasn't already illusory. There is no visceral sense of ownership that comes from living in a house and driving a car that belong to you.

Most big citys are Police states.. meaning there is too much money to lose if they go republican. state controlled welfare, dhs,court cases, filling up them jails and crime are all profitable to the state including jobs that pertain to such. it's sad really. Democratically ran citys like to give the illusion that they are more helpful and caring when in reality they keep the poor people poor and rich richer. There is no middle ground. Think of a big blue city as a "trans person". to much emotion and very confused but it gets lots of attention and thus identity politics are born out of it. we gotta help the mentally ill people and criminals before we can help ourselves. and it just ruins it for the rest of us. Democrats just want you on the plantation to be a slave and so you will ALWAYS need them.

causes a awakening, turning them into centrists, moderate rights, or libertarians
they deny it, maintaining their current worldview and living in denial of the facts they witness
