Most races went as they were polled, the Republicans made slight gains in the senate and gubernatorial elections, but the house the Dems made pretty large gains.

The house is the most important takeaway, but at the same time I don't think people expected the Senate to go this poorly for the Dems. This will make 2020 that much harder for them to attempt to take a majority in the senate, they needed to retain Florida and another seat at the very least, and flip at least one Republican held seat to have good position for 2020, as most of the Republican seats up for election that year are in deep red states. It's definitely an uphill battle.
