It's next to impossible to hold the House after your election as president, as anger at the presidential loss is a great motivator, while the winning side is more content. It take literally the largest terrorist attack or a massive sweeping victory to keep a hold of it. Since Trump had neither, the fact he only lost around 30 while also gaining seats in the senate is incredible.
