Chicago itself is a shithole and if you aren't living in the loop (the Manhattan equivalent), you probably don't have money, aren't well educated, and a minority. The surrounding burbs are extremely wealthy and make a sort of ring around the city. These towns (Lincolnshire and Lake Forest are the ones I have the most knowledge of) are filled with neo-coastals that are either wealthy fence sitters or hardcore libs. They also have the best schools and routinely fend off the nigs that try and move in, (muh property values) while also voting straight blue. Once you get a certain distance away from the city itself, it just turns into not-wisconsin/southern illinois which are filled with more local people as opposed to commuters.

There are several popular unis and colleges in/near the city, so there's a big draw to that. Otherwise, I GTFO as soon as I could by moving north.
