The smart thing to do would be to play ball with the Republicans and take advantage of the fact that they're just waiting for them to use them as ammo for 2020. Get some popular legislation soon, and realize that the people screeching for 'Impeach Orange Man' are a tiny minority when it comes to votes. What's actually going to happen is that they're going to dig their heels in as the 'anti-Trump' party. They're going to push for impeachment, subpoenas, and throw tantrums about obstructing and resisting. Trump has already whipped up the DNC base into a frenzy with Jeff Sessions stepping down, so when Mueller's investigation eventually turns up with nothing, the Left will implode.

Actually, the Trump administration performed better in the first mid-term elections than any president since Reagan. Bush, Clinton, Bush, and Obama lost more seats in their first mid-term than Trump did, and Obama went in with a supermajority.
The Dems will need to take the house again in 2020. They need to make positive gains for their base to retain faith and enthusiasm. They need to compromise and work with Trump to prevent moderates on the fence from voting R. They're trapped between a rock and a hard place now because SocDems will go rabid if the House does anything less than try to impede Trump. Moderates will vote R in 2020 if the House tries to appease the rabid SocDems and doesn't try to compromise with Trump. You can already see it starting. With Sessions fired, Trump has already begun talking about cannabis reform and working with the Dems on that. Dems now have to either abandon that position to oppose Trump (and piss off the moderates and extremists) or work with him on it (which will give moderates a reason to vote R and will still piss of extremists). I can see the Twitter posts now. "Cannabis legalization is needed but not at the cost of compromising with literally Hitler. I can't believe they would betray the #resistance like this!"
