They transformed a backwards post-feudal shithole nation of Tsarist Russia that suffered constant famines and droughts into the second biggest power in world history in under 30 years. After the 40s there was no starvation, but they only had access to shitty state provided food. If they had embraced complete free-market capitalism the Soviets would have been hailed as heroes

The Russian Empire was already on track to industrialize and modernize before the Soviets. It was steadily expanding through to the beginning of WWI. This, by and large, was something that terrified both Britain and Germany. And it, while comparatively backwards, was still a Great Power whose potential would have been better developed outside of communism.

But Nicholas II fucked it up by getting into the War. And Kerensky fucked it up by not punching to his left, staying in the War, and giving the Bolsheviks free reign.
