As a right-winger I can tell you that the drug warrior mentality is basically gone, especially in the case of Marijuana. No one is running for office on the platform of getting tough on drugs anymore. Even Trump ran on “addressing” the opioid crisis. Declaring marijuana a states’ rights issue is basically a way to save face and accept that the drug war has failed without actually admitting it.
