Consider this: gun laws are stricter now than they ever have been. In the roaring 20's, literally anyone could buy a fully automatic Tommygun for like 1000 modern USD, whereas now those types of guns are heavily regulated under the NFA. And they never had school shootings. Gangsters used them to shoot at each other, but you never had ordinary people shooting up crowds of unarmed civilians minding their own business. "OY VEY ANUDDA SHOOTING!" then they spend the next week talking about it non-stop, showing memorials for the victims, teary interviews with the survivors, profiles of the shooter where they speculate about his thoughts and motives, etc.
