I am an anesthesia resident. Usually they don't do surgeries for rib fractures because the risks of surgery and anesthesia usually outweigh the benefits from repair. If she is having difficulty breathing, they can attach her to mechanical ventilation to promote good air flow and prevent atelectasis and pneumonia. But elderly people are at increased risk of acquiring infections while in the hospital too.
