Think about it. A conservative majority is already ensured for the forseeable future. Thomas is the oldest conservative justice and he's only 70. He easily has another 15 years left. RBG's empty seat would essentially be meaningless.
At the same time, nominating Garland would kill the 'stolen seat' narrative and the 'divider in chief' narrative, and would earn Trump MAJOR points with independents who would see it as an olive branch and an attempt to 'heal the nation'. There would be no credible way for democrats to spin it in any negative way. Meanwhile Republicans could still credibly back him because, on the surface at least, they never opposed him personally, just the fact that he was put forward in an election year.
Garland is reasonably moderate too. Moderate enough that Obama thought he could get him through a Republican Senate. There may be backlash among evangelicals, but it would be small since Trump already delivered on 2 justices.
Nominating Merrick Garland would be a master move.
