The state of mental health services in this country is a fucking disaster. It's not a whole lot better in the rest of the world, but in the US it's especially bad. I am very mentally ill, and when I was unemployed, I had to wait months for even a single therapy appointment. I am convinced the best way to prevent mass shootings (which are a statistical anomaly, but still) is to broaden the amount of mental health services people can get, for free. We need more physiologists and more psychiatrists so that the literal mobs of mentally ill people can get their lives sorted out. Many shooters have some sort of mental impairment, and even just sitting down to talk with someone -other than the internal monologue that tells them shooting shit up is a good idea- can help tremendously, as can antidepressants and anti-psychotics. Train teachers, parents, etc. to know the warning signs of someone with mental illness and encourage them to take the person to theray (if they're a minor) or even call crisis response units if they feel the person might be an immediate harm. Seriously, I don't know why this is so complex. We've had shitloads of guns in this country for hundreds of years, but mass shootings just so happen to coincide with the mental health crisis and people can't see the connection?
