Day before everyone leaves one of the guys from another team breaks his hand punching a wall. I was offered the slot and went. I had fun and passing was a bitch. Always regretted not going to Ranger school since I wanted to transfer to Batt.

Active Duty Naval Officer here. I get paid about $6k/month and I'm about to promote and make another $1k/month, and that's before taxes. I also get free healthcare and dental, and this year I really started using it, saving me tens of thousands of dollars in medical care and diagnostic tests. I don't pay state income tax, because I had an opportunity right after commissioning to change my residency to a state with no state income tax for military members. Half of my income is untaxed anyway, so my overall tax rate is absurdly low. I don't pay sales tax on 90% of my purchases, because I shop on base, and when I do shop off base I frequently get a military discount ranging from 10% to 25%. I have access to short term no interest loans through the Navy, and can use the VA loan to buy a house for no money down and no PMA and a very competitive interest rate. I'm poorly trained to do my job, as are almost all military servicemen and women (I exclude special forces, they're very well trained).

I joined the Navy specifically for the benefits I described above. I wasn't able to find any kind of work after graduating college, so I talked to a recruiter just to avoid homelessness. The Navy then spent tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars on ineffective basic training and assigned me to a billet on a ship for which I was entirely unqualified. I did a terrible job objectively, but compared to my peers I was average. I then transferred to another department with much much lower "barriers to entry" and did better, leading men and women aged 18-21 in chipping paint and pulling in mooring lines (by hand). This involved me wearing a hard hat and looking attentive, while two chiefs actually led and supervised the activities.

Military members (at least officers) absolutely are welfare queens, and taxpayers get an awful return on their investment. WRITE YOUR CONGRESSMEN.

Big difference between a veteran who put his life on the line and a person who has done nothing getting taxpayer money.

I really enjoyed driving the ship, and might have even been passionate about it but the training I received was so poor and the leadership so inept, that it completely turned me off. This experience is typical across almost every specialty in the military. The people who become trainers typically do so because they want shore duty, not because they're the best at what they do. The best typically stay at sea and practice their craft as best they can with chiefs and officers up their ass 24/7.
