Maybe, if they had any factories. But they didn't and it would only mean that the north got richer and the balance of power/influence would tip even further in favor of the north.
But yeah, of course the solution when you're producing raw materials is to build factories that process this material. The problem is competing with existing factories, which you most likely can't. The north couldn't and that's why they needed tariffs.

That's literally the point of what I was saying. The tariffs were explicitly designed to promote industry throughout America- it's the American system first proposed by Hamilton- use tariff revenue to fund internal improvements and the tariffs themselves to protect industry, which wiill naturally follow the infrastructure. There's a REASON the feds spent a disproportionate amount of money on infrastructure in the south- they wanted to industrialize it.

Southerners didn't care about "America's" industry, they cared about their own state's industry (if they even did that). And a factory in each state wouldn't be profitable as they'd be too small and inefficient, like the ones in the north, but on a much higher level.

I mean you could have said that about industry as a whole in America in the 1790s, when we were an infant nation. Back then we had no industry whatsoever- the textile industry for example would have been an "unprofitable" investment for Americans at the time because Britain could supply all our needs for dirt cheap. But we chose to develop our own industry and by 1810 we had a thriving textile industry. It took about twenty years but it happened and it was worth it. You're not gonna get instant gratification developing your nation's industry, which the south could not or chose not to grasp despite us explaining it to them on multiple occasions.
You seem to forget that there's a lack of brotherhood among north and south and the southerners options were to sell to northern factories for less or to british factories for more. When selling to the north they didn't enrich their country, they enriched the country to the north. From their perspective the best way to enrich their own country was to sell their product to the highest bidder.

And whose fault is it for that lack of brotherhood? Certainly not the North's. As I've explained multiple times now, the federal government was explicitly trying to enrich the WHOLE country, south and north. A disproportionate amount of infrastructure funding went to the south, and by paying slighlty more than 80% of tariffs and purchasing slightly less than 80% of agricultural machinery, the north was actually taking more of a hit to the wallet than the south.
As for selling to British traders vs Northern factories, to quote Andrew Jackson:

New England, regardless of firebrand rhetoric at the Hartford Convention, wasn't seriously considering secession because they stood far more to lose than to gain (Connecticut in particular had the bonkers idea that they owned everything in a straight line to the Pacific, why would they sacrifice that?) and New York's copperheaded traitor of a mayor floated the idea around but nobody in the city council, or really even the city except for poor immigrants, supported it.

So every state in the union then? No one liked the union unless they dominated it. By the Civil War the north was gaining power over it and when more free states would be let in it would ensure the south would've never been politically relevant again. Both sides were guilty of wanting to control the other. Not to mention this idea of "one nation" wasn't mainstream until after the Civil War.

We explicitly stated our goals multiple times. Even the emancipation proclamation was designed solely to fuck with the southern economy, not because we actually cared about freeing the slaves.
And the rest of the North shared these sentiments. Northerners believed that America was the world's last hope- the last, best hope on earth- for republicanism, and that if we fell the light of liberty would be extinguished forever. We were unwilling to betray what had been so dearly bought in the blood of our ancestors less than a century before; we PRIZED what our forefathers had won and we weren't willing to let ourselves become like the moneyed oligarchs and aristocrats of Europe, the way you southerners were. We did believe in one nation, indivisible. We did believe in eternal Union. I'm just sorry you people were too blinded by your short term profits to see that.
Yes, the north wanted to preserve a union that they were the rulers of. They got their wish in the end. Neither side were ever interested in running a fair government where every side benefited equally. The rest is a bunch of nonsense. More nations resent America's "best hope" than wanted it even back then and especially now. Slavery was nothing more than the battleground on who would have power over the union and it would've died sooner or later. If the south didn't secede Lincoln would've eventually made a bunch of free states and slavery would've been abolished through a free state dominated Congress.

Considering that the Northern states were able to fight as a cohesive nation, while the CSA states almost immediately fell into infighting to the point where martial law had to be declared, and considering everything else I've already talked about earlier in the thread, I think it's pretty obvious that the North was fighting with the explicit preservation and prosperity of the Union in mind- ALL PARTS OF IT- while the south was fighting for their "peculiar institution" of slavery. Take off the lost cause glasses sometime and you'll see.
