Metal and glass are used because it's cheap. The entire city of Toronto is metal and glass and it's no better than commie blocks. It lacks character, it's cold, it's depressing. It is an ugly display of cultural decay.

Modern architecture started in the 1920s and sometimes even earlier. The Bauhaus movement and the Internationales Bauen were the first styles to emerge as a counter point to classical beauty. Look up Alfred Loos the kiddyfiddler if you want to see the first of those degenerate works being built.

Modern Architecture is meant to reflect the thoughts of the individual. It is also not meant to last. Investors have realized a property worthy of one of these monstrosities is going to only increase in value and utility. The sort of shit you can achieve with glass and metal as your building materials is different from what you can do with stone. Nobody is going to spend a boatload more money on importing a million tons of stone - not to mention the difficulty of finding stonemasons skilled enough to pull off all the fancy crenellations and buttresses and whatnot - when the materials, expertise and infrastructure to build glass and metal buildings are so much more easily available.

Because Western civilization was centered around the Christian faith, and most architectural elements had their source and origins in religious meaning, whether that be pagan (classical) or Christian (Catholic). After WWII, God was removed from society, so all of those aesthetic elements were removed from architecture. This was done on purpose. We are not allowed to have religious meaning tied to public art anymore.
