Any user here who knows about the French Foreign Legion or is/was a Legionnaire?
I want to have military training and experience combat. I would join the military of my country, but it's a joke and they don't do any missions. I love the idea of fighting abroad with a new name and gaining military experience. I don't do this for the money nor the French citizenship, I couldn't care less about it. I gave myself an year to prepare myself physically and mentally for the recruitment.
But what should I know before joining? Any shady shit that goes down and they don't tell you, etc.? What should I consider? I don't have trouble with French, as part of my family is from France and I learned it as family heritage when I was a kid (you think that'll ease things for me to enter?). Thanks in advance, Godspeed.
Thoughts on French Foreign Legion?

They probably won't take you. The Legion is really selective these days and typically takes those who don't have any other options in life as they aren't as likely to desert.
Isn't the selection meritocratic, though? Or do they actively rule out those who don't come from complete shitholes?
the reward use to be living in france.. rofl ya right faggots
if you like niggers it will right up your alley
British are discussing opening their military up to non-citizens.
I thought about doing it actually. I spent 8 years in the US Army as a paratrooper. But seriously, fuck France. I don't feel like dying for the biggest cuck of a country on Earth.
>An "argie" joining the British military
Yeah, that ain't happening. Ever.
every week this thread lol. it's not 189fucking4 anymore, you twat.
I heard it's complete shit and not modern, also once you finish your service and become a French citizen, you have to pay a shitton of tax
I knew a German who had served in a mixed German and French unit during the Yugoslav Wars, so he was somewhat familiar with the French Foreign Legion. Supposedly they beat you if you don't learn French quickly enough.
why would you join the (((foreign legion))) rather join a mafia squad or something shady to make dallahz instead of putting your life on the line for israel for an already infestated country.
This
Seriously look for the negatives so you aren't fucked when you actually get there. I've heard about people being killed by fellow legionnaires, practically hand to hand combat in Africa, undertrained soldiers outside of 1er rep, not getting citizenship unless you sign up with your legit identity, different nationalities have certain "mafias" ect
My wife's dad was a Legionaire. He was born in Germany and joined the Legion in 1950 and was in the battle of Dien Bien Phu. He was captured and was a POW for 2 years during which time they were repeatedly fed human flesh as part of their meals, and indoctrinated daily. When he was released he finished his time in the Legion the emigrated here to Australia. He died two years ago - but had some fucked up stories. He said joining the Legion was the biggest mistake he ever made.
My grandfather was a guard at Auschwitz. He died when he fell out of the tower.
Damn, that's fucked up. Thanks for your insight.
>I've heard about people being killed by fellow legionnaires
I figure they must have a big problem trying to bond soldiers from all around the world with different mentalities and worldviews.
>undertrained soldiers outside of 1er rep, not getting citizenship unless you sign up with your legit identity, different nationalities have certain "mafias" ect
Thanks for your insight.
Don't know if this is still the attitude, but his main gripe about the Legion was that it is seen as expendable cannon fodder by the regular French army. Only the officers are French, so the vast amount of casualties that have shaky family ties at best, so not much public outcry. Dien Bien Phu was a farce though - in his opinion the blase attitude about Legion casualties contributed to the rout, and they regulars weren't taking it seriously until it was too late.
fucking commie gooks were fucked up
>his main gripe about the Legion was that it is seen as expendable cannon fodder by the regular French army.
Yeah, the "You are expendable" is what I heard so far.
It is a big meme. Better join our navy. We had some good fregates now we need mechanics.
No BS. The Legion is BRUTAL. Not in making you a tough guy so you can walk around with swagger and get chicks brutal. I mean your everyday life is brutal. Meal times in their boot camp they place a pot in the middle of the table and the strongest at the table will take most of the stew. Yes. Really. Extrapolate the rest of the experience from there.
No. It's not worth it when you have other options.... any other options.
Reminds me of an old movie called The Dirty Dozen: youtube.com
GOOD JOKE
You will be literal cannon fodder protecting former colonies in Africa. Your reward, you get to live in the African nation of France.
This isn’t the the 1880s anymore. They get far more applicants that they have openings these days.
Why join the legion when you can join the U.S. military ?
>join the legion
>be considered expendable, be treated as an expendable, sometimes even get killed over table scraps or something
>have literal African superior officers
>have French commanding officers at positions that you will never achieve
>literally fight for France
I remember entertaining joining the FFL in like 1999, but some salty old roddy piper at a driving range type told me I was nuts for considering it
If I join do I have to buy the flag myself or will they supply it?
Full of faggots now. Just a big gay club.
Oh yeah, everybody always brings up the homo sex
in these threads, I mean
i'm going to join.
I think Dad is long past that bro.
and then i'll find a nice rural french village to fuck off to and forget about everything else
The Legion is a shitty experience. There's a lot of people who join it with a romantic vision in their head only to find out that they're just going to end up cleaning shit for a few years while getting yelled at and beaten. That leads to a high desertion rate by those who have other options in life.
It wouldn't be impossible for you to get into the Legion, but it honestly isn't worth working so hard for and being treated like shit by the French of all people.
If you really want to fight, then serve in your own country's military first (you might even realize during service that you don't actually care much for fighting) and then look into other options like PMCs or volunteering afterwards. You won't make it far anywhere without prior military experience.
>only to find out that they're just going to end up cleaning shit for a few years
what if you ace their IQ test? i could score >120 if i really wanted to.
