you see the rounded gaps, that's where the tree bark was not covering the inner tree. it happens in older trees. A spark must have landed on one of those spots and set the inner wood, which is much more flammable than the bark on fire. The tree burned, but the heat wasn't enough to ignite the bark which is adapted to prevent fire. Depending on the species of tree this might be intentional to clear space for new saplings.
