I think the modern world wrought from the post-war liberal order, despite the many desirable material gains it has provided, has failed to offer a genuine outlet youthful adventure and, even, violence, to a degree. Inside these narratives the protesters are able to create the sense of identity, even if flawed, that the post-war liberal order denies them. I think much of the last couple of years could be framed as a reemergence of a will-to-identity that has been increasingly frustrated under liberalism.
