Actual civil war? Most likely not but a government upheaval is surely overdue and depending on what comes of that we should then consider our options. From where I sit I currently see no reason to consider this a legitimate government and honestly I don't know if I ever will at this point. Without completely gutting a lot of it and burning down our political parties I don't see any good way forward and this option, possibly our best option, will be a long and difficult process to say the least. It will make us both vulnerable and isolated and the level of lawlessness would be awful. Still better than out and out civil war but who can say.

I think you have a number of factors that are pushing it that way:
1) The left is not accepting Trump as a legitimate president, nor have they since day 1.

2) The left has gone full-bore obstructionist - we have a non-functional government come January, whereas from the election it has simply been dysfunctional.

3) The nonsense with Kavanaugh etc is now going to happen to Whitaker - get ready for it. Smear time is here. There's attacks (reputational or physical) against others. ANTIFA etc. is normalizing violence of all sorts.

4) Trump has militarized the Southern border. This will likely spark conflict when/if the caravan arrives, and unrest in cities. There may be direct protests and conflict if activists gather on the border.

5) There's the ongoing issue or what probably was the interference in the 2016 Trump election and involvement in intel agencies there. That spins out into the Mueller probe, and what happens when/if it is shut down, or the results are ignored by the new AG/acting AG.

6) The latest election shenanigans are a big problem. Increasing dramatic measures to seize power by the Left - election fraud seems likely at least in four states.

All of this is radicalizing everyone, on both sides. You can argue that Trump and his rhetoric is inflammatory, but the fact is there are a lot of concrete encroachments into "soft coup" or insurrection territory by the left.

I wonder if the Kemp election in Georgia might be the big flashpoint.
