It's incorrect to see God as not interfering with the world. The idea of God letting the world run on its own after creating it or just coming in later to act is an idea of the early moderns. Traditionally, God actively conserves all of reality. This is seen as God's one act of creation being something made all at once but is something we only see play out in time.
God wills what is best for us at all times. Through prayer we come closer to God to meet the mark to receive what God willed for us when we were ready. As such, prayer is not simply therapeutic but also has effect. Even when asking for things we are showing devotion to God, just as when we are angrily lashing out at what God has willed. As you can see, though, the idea of prayer as wish-fulfillment in this is nonsensical. This traditional understanding is why prayer has been called virtuous.
But it is also twofold as God's grace working in us is what motivates prayer. As such, prayer is us already responding to God's call to us. This is also why it's also sometimes referred to as a conversation.

I've blabbed about myself way too much over the last few weeks. All I have to say about it now is that it was utterly insane. This has not been one of those chill conversions.
But things are great now. I've met priests, started going to confession and taking communion, and have been praying a fair bit (I could always step it up). Other parishioners have been extremely kind to me. I'm being initiated into Knights of Columbus tomorrow!
Going to Mass at 7pm tonight, I've kind of settled into that one and recognize people already. I love quiet short early Masses on weekdays and Saturdays though. While the world sleeps...I used to get the same joy jogging. Maybe I'll jog at like 5am and get both!
