You are either lying or don't know shit about Greece. This is a common practice in Greek restaurants. It's part of being hospitable to their customers. In the countryside they tend to offer you spirits that they've made themselves. In city centers it's just something they've ordered/bought from someone else.
NONE ever charges you for spirits they give you for free.

Generally nice and hospitable. The younger they are the better english they'll speak. Most store owners can speak basic English anyway due to tourism. Avoid politics if possible. The average Greek tends to be more carefree, fun-oriented.

Generally good tier. Personally I don't go crazy about it but tourists usually do.

As mentioned, Greeks are feelings oriented. If you're fun/pleasant to be around they'll probably like you. Easy to get to know and welcoming.
The country now?
Athens' city center is more or less a shithole. I know that some tourists seem to like it for some weird reason but I doubt a Jow Forumsack would like it (for the same reasons I don't like it). Countryside can be comfy, depending on where you are located. Suburban areas in Athens are super nice, clean, semi-rich & nicer people. Also less niggers/gypsies (they lurk around the center, as usual).

The people are lazy but ok, the food is good, the traffic is very dangerous and most people in athens dont respect zebra-crossing and sometimes not even lights (both drivers and pedestrians), parking is retarded, alcohol is balls to the wall expensive in the cafes/bars considering the median salary, women can be cute but half of the cutes ones have jew nose, the weather is good, the spoken language is ok, written greek has some pretty weird rules.
As far as mediterranean countries go, its 6/10.

Very friendly and hospitable people, definitely the nicest people I've come across in Europe. Beautiful weather and beaches. Nice food. Lots of interesting old ruins to see. You can tell they're going through hard economic times though.

As someone who lived in Greece most their life. The people can answer you back in English for most things, it won’t be flawless, but you can work with it, the food is good as long as you eat fish since we eat our steak and meat in general well done and almost burnt, the country now is in pretty good shape, I recommend you visit some of the more touristy places like some islands like Mykonos or Skiathos, since you won’t even be able to tell we have been going through a debt crisis for the past few years.
