you don't have to speak any French, you get a crash course and you'll learn really quick or get a beating from a commander why you aren't following French spoken orders.

Best way in is join your own military, do nothing for 3yrs as small deployments right now, then go get FFL contract as you will guaranteed fight somewhere, prob Africa in 50+deg heat. FFL retirement gibs are pretty sweet too

Assuming you're an Irishman, your national forces will almost certainly offer better conditions and perks than the FFL, as well as a higher salary.

The Legion are not an elite force. They are merely a more expendable force than the regular army, which is why they may be sent into hot territory more often or sooner than other elements in the army.
Also, ask yourself if you're joining for the romanticism or for something else. You're not going to be travelling to exotic places to conduct exciting operations at the other edge of the world. News flash: France doesn't really have any meaningful colonies left. Apart from being stationed in France your options are Djibouti (hell) French Guyana (humid hell) and Corsica (nice, I guess).

The physical tests are not weightlifting but mostly walking over very long distances, having little sleep, etc.

I'd recommend against the FFL, but you still have the option of going out there, trying for selection and opting out at the last minute. Be warned, though: make sure to read up diligently on all the available information concerning selection camps so you head out at the right time. People who just turn up at a recruitment centre could end up spending several weeks there because they arrived at the wrong time.

Sorry, I don't want to bullshit. I haven't been to the Legion, but I did consider joining very seriously a number of years ago and spent a long time on the cervens forum dedicated to the FFL.

Something else not expected by joining is you are truly disposable, there is no such thing as surrender in the FFL or negotiating for your release if captured.
You are to fight to the death and never expect any kind of backup if shit hits in the fan in middle of nowhere Central African Republic or wherever shithole they send you to.

I dont know about now, however; I heard there are a lot of africans, so YOu'll probably have an african officer supervising you, and your life will be in peril in the sense of the fact that you could be murdered and nobody would know why youw ere murdered since you're technically expendable. Also people always talk about there being lots of homo stuff, overall degenerate stuff promoted like prostitutes.. you get the idea. Finally, again, you're expendable. France uses you as a bullet shield at best, and you won't have much chance for any advancement. Sheeit, French are even in the FFL now. That's hard times daddy

After 5 years of basically being a janitor (because that's what being a soldier in the military ultimately is), they get French citizenship, a pension and gibs. For them it's better than the lives they have in their home countries.
You, as an European, have no need for any of that. You could come to France and get gibs right away, and you can already get gibs in your own country anyway.

PS, you can probably serve in the US military, which is probably the best force in the world for things like advancement, access to technology, etc. The problem is that you'd be serving the interests of Washington, which often means fighting wars that are basically against American interests

The key to getting accepted is telling them you have nothing else in life. My brother got accepted despite being a skinny nerd at the time because he told them he had no money, no way home, no family to go back to, ect.

If they believe you have nothing to go back to then you're less likely to desert, and desertion is a huge problem in the legion. They'd rather take someone unqualified to be a soldier who is a low desertion risk than ex military who is likely to desert.
