Paganism can't be retarded since it isn't even a single definable entity. What paganism essentially is, is a network of very loosely (if at all) intertwined ethnic religions. Also, you said that you need a myth to join everything together in a way that implies paganism has none, while the individual beliefs of paganism are literally fundamentally based on national myth and folklore.
