My old landlord, 70ish year old guy, lives in the hills outside of Malibu (not sure of exact location), but he has told so many stories of wildfires. Some were really close calls, as in he almost burned to death. He said numerous times the fire department was useless, and the only way to keep the house was to have water storage and a pump on generator.

He never lost his house, but came close a number of times. My point is these things happen every 5 or 10 years. The ground clutter builds up and the place burns. Every spring he would clear the brush to the ground in order to keep his house safe -in fact I remember him saying he would clear beyond his property to help the fire go over his house and not up to it.

It's a sad situation for sure, some don't take it seriously enough, but these things have happened, and will happen again no matter how much government regulation...
