Well really the movement against Empire goes back to Gladstone and (((Disreali))). By that time( mid 19th century) there was increasing skepticism amongst the liberal establishment about the wars and empire and a general feeling that it was immoral. This trend only accelerated with the beginning of the Indian independence movement and the excesses of the Boer War which deeply embarrassed Britain and undermined her moral authority among the other European powers. David Lloyd George and labour were in control by that time as well and there was an increasing consensus that the Empire wouldn't last forever post war, that contingencies must be made and to hold on indefinitely was morally untenable. Churchill and the pro Empire Tories were the last obstacle politically. Militarily it was over when Japan kicked the British out of E. Asia in WW2 and the country was completely worn out after expending all its resources to defeat Hitler. Labour got full control post WW2 and then formally started dismantling the Empire and gradually granting independence to the former colonies.

I might be wrong but my best theory is that after WWII the world started looking down on empires that ruled with an iron fist.
Sure you can say that Cuba and The Soviet Russia still ruled but the world looked down on them.
The British kept their colonies because they ruled them with an iron fist, and once the world started looking at that negatively they had to loosen their grip; they couldn't be as brutal as they were in the past. This meant that countries that were once intimidated by a hard ruling empire now had a little more wiggle room to rebel. The British couldn't just straight up murder a large group of protesters, they couldn't just kill Ghandi because the world would look at that negatively.
Thusly a lot of countries got away from British rule and that brought the entire empire down.
