The Empire did lots of good things. It mainly ruled areas with a tiny amount of government civil servants (there are more government civil servants in the UK today alone then there were at the height of the British Empire all over the world) and it generally didn't displace or genocide the native populations.

It allowed them to continue their traditions, culture, religions and way of life. It only replaced laws with British such as the right to a fair legal trial for murders and rapists etc. and stopped local traditions if they include killing women and children for nonsensical reasons.

Most people had a better way of life, safer, fairer, more prosperous under the Empire.
