The craziest thing about Pearl Harbor is it had the potential to win the war for Germany in Europe. America has been supplying the Allies with weapons through the Lend/Lease Act and American sentiment was largly isolationist. With Japan’s attack, all of those resources would have been fully brought to bear in the Pacific, but Hitler did the craziest fucking thing he could: the honorable one. Germany’s pact with Japan didn’t require them to declare war if Japan is the aggressor, but he did it anyway. Then FDR impliments the “Europe First” strategy and the rest is history.

The Japanese meant it to be a show of force and to decimate the majority of the Pacific fleet in the region. They were trying to dominate the pacific and viewed Hawaii as their clay. They also viewed the Americans as undertrained and outclassed, which to be fair we were. Japan had all forms of military advantage in the pacific. They had better destroyers, better fighter planes and a larger presence overall, both in land and naval positions.

The early parts of the war were really bad for the US. Marines got landlocked after fleets got pushed back and we had several naval battles not go out way. Probably the most amazing thing about the pacific theater was how fast the Americans built up forces and turned the tide. They were building a destroyer and sending them out almost weekly, and we built over 6,000 ships during the war. On top of this, we quickly gained air and naval supremacy and pushed the Japanese a quarter of the way across the globe in territory and international waters.

Europoors can make the jokes about the Russians doing the heavy lifting in the European theatre, and while we helped they certainly did. But the pacific theatre was won by the Americans. Australians and British were too busy getting their asses kicked in South East Asia and we were the primary force fighting the Japanese and island hopping them out of existence.
