A decade ahead? I lived in Chch for 3 years and moved all over NZ, you are about 20-30 years behind us in terms of everything, I wouldn't even consider NZ a first world country.

I think if I had to spend another year in NZ i'd hang myself from bordem. Once you've climbed a mountain or 2 you've done it and you're left staring at empty fields and guys driving around in Japanese cars.

1 city on the South island worth visiting and it's fucked and won't be a city again for at least 10 years. It seems you have 1 architect who is employed by every single person who is building houses in NZ because no matter where you go, every single house looks the same. Or you have 3 different designs that are staggered through an estate of about 1,000 houses, it's so depressing to see. If you drive for 10 minutes out of a city you end up on some kind of dirt road that wouldn't look out of place in Africa, and you'll be surrounded with fields with nothing in them. If you drive from Chch to go and see something like Queentown, you will drive for hours and hours in what I can only describe as a desert of fields, it's just depressing.
Also everything shuts at about 9pm. Beer costs a fortune so it's not worth going out so you all cram yourselves into your bros house to drink a few cans every weekend. Your taxis cost a fortune so if you live anywhere outside of the city and want to go out for a drink, you'll spend what you spent on the night out on a taxi
In fact I had a few occasions where the shop shut 20 or 30 minutes before it was supposed to shut for no reason, they must have just decided they couldn't be fucked staying open any more.
