They could have had any number of things. Humans have been roughly the same for the last 100k years as far as biology and capacity for intelligence goes. If you look at things like the Vedic text from Hindus who go into intricate detail about flying machines, their means of propulsion and even the ways in which they waged war. Humanity has probably risen and fallen multiple times in that span.
