I agree with you to an extent. Anyone who views the substances themselves as a means of enlightenment/self improvement are fooling themselves. Having used psychedelics, I am of the opinion that the acute effects present the brain with novel stimuli and thought patterns that allow one to reexamine their normal perception of the waking world. Engagement in such reflection is the responsibility of the user, especially in the afterglow of a strong dmt experience.

The visions/hallucinations you experience on DMT feel more real than life itself. It triggers the feeling of enlightenment and during that moment you understand the meaning of life. It is as if you have woken up, as if you have turned on a light.
Then it fades and you forget the details, like a dream. But the feeling is so real, and the memory will stay with you for the rest of your life.
