Health insurance is also a huge burden on marriage. It's much cheaper to stay unmarried to get better rates on the market place. I've been in a weird position of seeing firsthand the extremes of society in terms of social class, and many of the privately educated people I've met expect and usually do get married by 30 (even if they act rebellious and progressive etc in their youth), almost always to other privately educated people. My povvo friends back home aren't married for the most part, with one or two the exception but their the ones making more than average.
