Liberalism is based on Marxism, Fascism, National Socialism, and Communism...
Liberalism in the early 20th century was based on Innovation and Technology and not so much about these other National Socialist things. Germany and Britain were the great National Socialist Countries because that is where European Marxism originated from.

As Mises explained in Human Action, there are two forms of socialism. One is the Russian/Communist form, in which the state owns and controls the economy. The other is the German/Nazi form. There, the state may not formally own all businesses, but they totally control them. Prices, wages, hiring, production, etc. are all dictated by the government.

So yes, the Nazis were socialists of a type, and thus leftists.
