That's what I feared. It's not that hard to survive small calibers since the face is pretty well protected. Even if you get a rifle round in the brain, it's going to be deflected and slowed down by the thickest parts of your skull and only non-essential lobes are immediately in the way. You need either pretty catastrophic damage or some very precise injuries to cause death outright; drilling a hole in the brain is not necessarily going to kill you and may not even measurably affect you. Damage to the lobe that's right there can be very subtle, since the forehead is where many of your higher human-like functions are. You might not lose the ability to speak or understand, but you may lose the ability to make a good point, or keep track of the truth, or the self-control to not say certain things.
If it's too outwardly disgusting or crippling, his personal life and public persona will never recover. If he's able to get away with only moderate brain damage and a nasty scar, he can at least use it to his advantage. I've seen some pretty bad ones though, where the bullet just rips through the nose and caves in the face without hitting the brain. He's probably better off dead. Maybe.
