I deal with this every Spring since I commute by bike when the weather is nice. The first week my legs will be tired after 30 miles, the next week I won't even notice.
Weather usually isn't a huge deal either. Pretty much all the problems with weather can be fixed with decent gear, which isn't all that expensive.
Don't get me wrong, sometimes it kind of sucks, but so does commuting in general.

My colleague is almost 60 and always bikes to work even during winter.
They have done a great disservice to real homeless vets, unemployed vets and Veteran Charities. hard enough to get the help now and I am suspect about this douche being a Veteran.
I don't even go to free events or participate in Veteran ceremonies because I see too many phony veterans. They wear the wrong awards with the wrong uniform. I spotted a guy wearing a bunch of Army awards with his Marine dress blues, I asked him when he was in the Army? He gets mad insults the Army and says I'm a MARINE. I just went further and asked him questions about his service, rank, MOS, first commander, battle budy, laundry number, LES, Drill Instructor, etc, and they were rapid fire questions. I asked him to name one General Order and that is the clincher , if you don't even know that one, you are a loser, poser POS. It wasn't about stolen valor, it was just another dick larping as homeless Veteran and making us all look bad.
All I want is the medical and retirement, and the home loan (got it) everything else doesn't matter. You want to thank me, join up and take my place in the ranks. This homeless fucker didn't even try to work the system.

in the US, average marathon time (26 miles) is 10 (9:59) minute miles. you spend about 4 hours running to work and 4 hours running home, plus an 8 hour work day? full of shit.

The fact that this is considered some kind of athletic achievement is sad. Any healthy adult should be able to do this. Any healthy adult CAN probably do this, even if you have never done any exercise in your life. If you aren't in shape, you'll probably be uncomfortable for a little while, but it's totally doable.

my time is usually a little over 4.25 hours each way - about 11 miles a minute. slow and steady but keeping that good vibe pace. my work day is only four hours long - but it's as a muy thai instructor so i go hard bro. that's the key bro - go hard bro.
it's not that it's an achievement (i do two 50 milers a year, and at least 4 20 milers a month all year) it's that for the distance it's time drain. if we take 15mph (a vigorous pace, but if the person is biking every day it shouldn't be a problem) for 60 miles thats 4 hours added to the work day. every day.

Yeah, time is a factor, and 4 hours a day commuting is on the high side, but it's not a massive outlier. Keep in mind that you're also getting some recreation and exercise though which would otherwise eat into your day.
It's a different kind of time too. I don't think anyone likes sitting in a traffic jam for 2 hours, but a 2 hour bike ride can be quite pleasant.

I dunno, I like riding my bike? We have a rather extensive system of trails where I live that are nice to ride on and are super convenient. At one of my old jobs I had a 12 mile commute and almost all of it was on trails. That particular ride home was one of my favorite parts of the day. I'd just slap on a podcast or something and clear my head.
My new job isn't quite as nice. Around the same distance, but only about 1/4 of it is on trails so I have to pay more attention. There's also a part where I have to ride behind a bar and there's always broken glass there. I fucking hate replacing tubes and shit. Next time I buy tires I'm going to give Gatorskins a try.
I don't do much commuting in the winter anymore, but there was a period of about 3 years when I didn't have a car and I'd commute rain/shine/snow.
you could do 30 miles to work and 30 miles back home every day, but you have to figure into this the mega meal you must consume before, after, and then before setting off again, and after returning home, and take into further consideration how fucking bad your knees/ankles/whatever WILL start to ache after too many days of this idiotic routine.
