A little history: During the cold war, the CIA was looking for a way to defeat the Soviets on an ideological and informational front - the question being "How do we convince people we're right and they're wrong?". This research led down the dark path of Persuasion/Advertising/Mind Control, and this path is what has ultimately destroyed the entirety of Western Civilization in the present century.
How it works: It's actually mind-bogglingly simple. You use media to create false memories and false stereotypes.
What does that mean? When you see James Bond being a Do-Gooder in a Bond film, and you see how his actions reward him, you internalize the 'action -> reward' presented. In effect, you unconsciously believe what you see, even if you can consciously affirm that Bond films are not real, unconsciously you trust the axioms and assumptions presented in the medium.
Another example: In movies it is very common for people to be blown backwards by a pistol. It's a 'hollywoodism' and 'theatrics' which doesn't happen in real life. If you watch real life videos of people being shot, they either behave almost as if nothing happened, or they instantly drop to the ground. People who've watched many movies internalize this, and are surprised when real life gunshots do not fling people around like ragdolls, even though they KNOW the movies they watch are not real.
What has happened in the West is a political coup, a take over through control of modern media. Primarily through Hollywood movies and News. Do you want to know who's running society? Look at where Hollywood, Advertisers, and News Media all take their marching orders (they do not necessarily have to be explicit orders - the media self-perpetuates and reinforces its mind control in a feedback loop).
This is why videogames are getting pozzed to shit. They're even better than movies at causing you to internalize foreign beliefs and assumptions (old media - print, verbal communication are the worst at it) because not only are you presented with these assumptions, but you're also forced to interact, in effect to BE 'James Bond' and receive the arbitrary and fake rewards for good behaviour. Videogames are being turned into the ultimate mind-control tools.
Now, I said earlier that print and verbal communication (e.g. theatre) doesn't do this quite so much. Why? Because of natural selection. People susceptible to this brainwashing end up acting against their own interests, and in the long run that kills them. Either through decisions they make, "Going into the ghetto for directions isn't a bad idea", "Trump is just like Voldemort so we should impeach him and put psychopaths in charge" - or the consequences of ideologies they've come to support, "We need to start a nuclear war with Russia because they hacked our elections", "There is nothing wrong with our declining birth rates and white people suck anyways, let's just import genetically different populations to demographically replace us". Print and verbal communication have been with us for thousands of years - videogames and movies and TV ads have not. We have a natural inoculation against the old, but not the new.
How do we fix it: First of all, this problem fixes itself. See my aforementioned ghetto and nuclear war scenarios. Because those who are brainwashed act against their own best interests, they are quickly removed from the gene pool. However, not all of us would like to see our entire society blown to ashes because half the population puts almost religious faith in the media they consume.
The brainwashing is simple, and so is the inoculation: Tell people the Truth Show people the Truth
Someone who believes a pistol will send you flying like a ragdoll, will no longer believe this if you can present evidence to him of the contrary and in a more 'trustworthy' medium than the previous media. In other words, what they experience personally, in real life, will trump their beliefs established by hollywood movies, tv ads, and videogames.
But we can fight on the same footing as tv ads, movies, and videogames, by creating our own tv ads, movies, and videogames. Memes and humor are in effect, an anti-body against mass brainwashing.

Trump isn't using media to warp how reality is perceived by his supporters - he has virtually zero influence in this way at all. Nor does disagreeing with modern media mean you are just brainwashed by 'something else'; if you tell me the sky is neon green and I say, "No it is not, it's blue". That does not mean I've been brainwashed into believing the sky is blue while you have been brainwashed into believing the sky is green.
Furthermore, and going back to your initial assertions, what I've read of history tells me there is never such a thing as a grassroots rebellion. Every single one I've seen has been influenced and financed by rich and powerful people who think they can one-up and take over from the current crop of rulers, in essence I agree with part of what you've said.
However that doesn't mean these 'elites' are necessarily antagonistic to the population. Ultimately due to competition if you can't from a strong in-group you will be dismantled and destroyed by those who have. That means leaders actually have to look after their followers, and if they don't, they fail and collapse - which is fundamentally why there is such a political rift in the West today. Our current leaders are failing, hard, and the opportunity is opening for newer and better leadership to replace them.
The LeaderFollower relationship is necessarily symbiotic and beneficial to both. When it stops being beneficial to one, the connection breaks down e.g. Trump gets elected.
By no means is Trump the end of this. Unless/Until conservative issues with the world are actually satisfactorily addressed, there will continue to be people and groups like Trump opposing the faltering 'new world order'.
