They came from a time when their was too many jobs and not enough workers. jobs paid great wages, working at a normal job is basically like making 20-25 dollars an hour back then.
If you worked any bigger job money went up fast where a government job pulled in easily 50k+ compared to todays inflation.

Now the average single income is 30,000 average home 250,000 car 30,000. In order to do what the boomer could do with 12,000 you have to make 90,000. That would be true if it weren't for credit cards, home equity loans, etc -- the goods are actually being bought at about the same rate, but they'd be being paid in cash instead of racking up debt with interest.

It's easy to forget about consumer debt when thinking about inflation. You could theoretically increase everyone's income to the point where consumer debt stops increasing, and there'd be no inflationary effects at all for this reason. That's why (((economists))) were surprised that the Trump tax cuts didn't spike inflation.
