I'm not sure either but I do think it would be less effective.
Our culture is set up in such a way that men have to compete with each other for women, whereas even a moderately attractive woman can freely choose from a lineup of men who'd all want to date her.
In other words, women date who they want while men settle for what they can get.
So with that in mind, targeting women would be much more effective.
