The only problem I have with independence is PR residents have US citizenship (Thanks Woodrow Wilson) so I would expect a mass exodus to the mainland if they are let go.
If it was politically viable for the US to revoke citizenship and have full immediate (So they can't come over during some lame duck period) independence I would support that, but it's not.
