gay people (gay men anyway) are generally better off financially than straight couples. they will, generalising again, have a property which is paid off and have savings which can pay for their care during later life. straight couples instead invested that money into their children who would either provide care themselves or the finances for care should the old person not be able to provide it. i don't know about lesbians because they are generally a mess.
