Honestly, I just think the J.K. Rowling gravy train is reaching its inevitable end. A LOT of stories do really well initially, and/or in the first few sequels. Harry Potter did amazingly well, better than most in the genre, outside the obvious outstanding work around LotR or Dragonlance. Stuff just gets stale after awhile, one's writing becomes "oh, this again", effects artists try entirely too hard to pick up the slack.

Really, I think if a couple other really good fantasy writers picked up the story, breathed some fresh air into the series, it could have a reawakening. Nothing at all against Rowling, as I said she had an amazing run.

None of the black characters were forced, because their race was never previously established, and it was never brought up or looked out of place. They never explicitly stated he was gay anyway, honestly at first I thought they were actually brothers, since I'm not well versed in the lore of the Harry Potter series.

NPCs think this is a franchise killer. But if they had a bit of brains they wouldn't be surprised of this, coming from the dullest franchise in the history of movie franchises. Seriously each episode following the boy wizard and his pals from Hogwarts Academy as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Rowling vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; she made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody?just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for her books. The Harry Potter series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.

Reason they are making Harry Potter spin-off films is quite simple: they made OBSCENE amount of money for Warner Brothers, for a decade. To the point that when the original film series ended, Warner Brothers pretty much went into a full-on panic.

The original eight Harry Potter films made so much fucking money for Warner Brothers, that they were able to use those profits to cover losses on a lot of high profile flops and artsy type films that flopped at the box office but got a ton of awards.

Furthermore, Warner Brothers got so fucking addicted to that Potter cash the films were making, that it severely fucked up the studio's financials. The during the decade they were making Potter films, it caused their profits to triple and quadruple and investors/shareholders never really bothered to realize that this was a bubble and not realistic long term profits. The year after the last film came out, profits were WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY fucking down and investors/shareholders were pissed the fuck off and didn't care that the bubble had finally busted.

Worse, Warner Brothers FUCKED UP their DC Cinematc Universe. They desperately wanted the DC movies to fill that hole in their estimated profits that the end of the Potter films created. But they fucked up this by putting the DC Cinematic Universe in the hands of Zach fucking Snyder and her fucked it all up and then some.

And just to add the cherry to the shit sandwich sunday, Warner Brothers continued to churn out high profile flop/awards bait films that crashed and burnt at the box office. Except now they don't have the Potter cash to cover up the fact that a good chunk of their film slate each year failed to turn a profit.

Fantastic Beast itself exist because Warner cant survive without that Potter cash. And because Rowlings had a great lawyer when she signed away the movie rights, Warner Brothers can't just make Harry Potter 9 or the Adult Adventures of Harry Potter/Hermonie Granger: Magic Cops or continue the story of the main three. She basically sold them the movie rights to Fantastic Beast as a gesture of pity, which is why the new film series exists and why they are desperate for it to succeed.
