Depends on where you live. For people that live in the middle of nowhere, it could be a significant drive to a polling station even if the wait isn't long.
That said it isn't an excuse and they still have plenty of time to vote if they want to

In my definition a "republic" is simply not a monarchy, but can be democratic or dictatorial and a "democracy" simply means that it is not a dictatorship but can still be headed by a king or by the people.

In my definition the US are both, a democracy and a republic.
And the fact that there are laws on how the election system works does not make it less democratic.

Ever wonder why the word "democracy" never appears in the Declaration of Independence or the U.S. Constitution? Because the U.S. is a republic, it's always been a republic, and trying to shoehorn loose definitions of democracy is how people get confused.
