OP here. One problem is that until recently I assumed far too much that other people thought rather like me. For example, if I said something witty, and some dude just rolled his eyes, I would assume that he had a similar intelligence to me, had judged my witticism and found it wanting. Rather than the actual fact - he had no idea what I was talking about. This is a real issue! It's instnctual and hard to overcome. I'm trying to think of people as children - even those in positions of authority - until they prove otherwise. This helps a bit.
