In fact, a country garners real power when it can rely on strong economic structures, and that is exactly what Iran lacks.
For instance, Iran faces a serious water crisis. Eisa Kalantari, head of Iran's environmental organization, recently said that due to the water shortage, landmarks of the country’s millenia-old civilization were at risk of perishing within 15 years. As groundwater becomes overused, land sinks, and historic monuments collapse.
Or let’s look at Syria. Defeating ill-equipped and divided militia forces with the help of Russia is one thing, but rebuilding Syria and making it a stable country again will take much more than sending in 30,000 fighters and weapons.
Iran's heavy reliance on oil income, the severe weakness of its industry, a high unemployment rate, widespread corruption, a lack of proper economic infrastructure such as a well-functioning banking system, weak foreign trade, and a weak national currency are some of the obstacles that prevent Iran from becoming a real regional power.
Furthermore, not long ago, Iran faced an imminent risk of economic collapse. According to President Hassan Rouhani in 2013, when he first assumed office, the country was on the edge of bankruptcy.
“If oil exports had stopped, the government would have faced serious problems in running the country and covering people's basic needs. At the same time, the inflation rate would have gone up in an unprecedented and exorbitant manner,” Rouhani said during this year’s presidential election.
If that had happened, the country would have imploded from within, even without a military invasion by other countries, Rouhani added.
Ruptly youtube.com/watch?v=32jNIgIsXs4 Iranian children being treated for cancer are facing the consequences of a drug shortage due to the recently re-imposed US sanctions, footage filmed at the Mofid children's hospital in Tehran on Sunday reveals. For 38-year-old Maryam Haghverdilo, mother of Arshia who has been undergoing chemotherapy for lymphoma over the past five months, the US-imposed sanctions on banks affect people's ability to purchase items abroad, including medication.
"Mr. Trump says that he has not imposed sanctions on drugs, he has rather imposed sanctions on banks, these sanctions mean that we cannot buy medication. It means that we cannot pay European countries for medication to be imported," she said. "We are worried about the next stage of chemotherapy about whether medication can be found or not," Haghverdilo added. She went on to say that even though she might be able to travel to find medication, other less fortunate people may not have the same ability.
For Maryam, it's the children that are suffering the consequences. "Children are innocent," Haghverdilo said, and added "there are so many children here who really need these drugs." The United States reinstated all of the sanctions it had previously lifted as part of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), or Iran nuclear deal, on November 5. The sanctions target Iran's oil, banking and shipping industries and the Trump administration has also promised to institute harsh penalties for any other states that continue to conduct trade with the country.

On 26 June 1980, an assassination attempt on Hafez al-Assad, the Syrian president, was carried out by Muslim Brotherhood supporters who threw two grenades and fired machine gun bursts at him as he waited for an African diplomat in the Guest Palace in Damascus. Assad kicked one grenade out of range, whilst one of Assad's bodyguards threw himself on the other grenade.

Hezbollah turns the city of Qusayr in Homs into a center for narcotic pills and the Captagon
The Syrian regime confiscated large amounts of narcotics and "Captagon" pills from the Qusayr area, which is controlled by the Lebanese Hizballah militia in rural Homs.
The pro Syrian regime Facebook bages reported that the security services found on Saturday evening large quantities of narcotic pills hidden within the wooden doors coming from the countryside of Qusayr and heading towards the city of Latakia.
Hezbollah militia has the trade of narcotics as a major source of funding for human trafficking and money laundering, and has turned its control areas in Syria into fertile ground for the marketing, promotion and smuggling of contraband.
