This is nothing new. The american coucil of pediatricians states that 98% of prepubescent children with gender identity issues will resolve thier issues when treated with one on one counseling. The majority of the 2% that truly are gender dysphoric will resolve thier issues when treated for depression.
A very, very VERY small number of the gender dysphoric will be unable to resolve thier issues without resorting to gender transition in adulthood.
Actual gender dysphoria is one of the rarer mental illnesses that exist.

I have autism and it gives me sensory issues which make me feel very uncomfortable in my own skin constantly. If someone came up to be at 13 and said you can take that feeling away if you change your gender then I would have took it honestly. Sadly autistic kids don’t realize that changing their gender wont help at all with that. I read a sad case of two women with autistic sons both in their late teens who wanted to transition. Both mothers knew their sons would go through obsessive stages over random things that would pass in a couple of years. They were really frightened that doctors would start transitioning them.
