Become a lineman if you dont want to hack it in college. Pre-apprenticeship certification program from my local community college cost only 3000 dollars or so, and gets your foot in the door with good linework companies as opposed to guys hired off the streets. As an apprentice you'll make 26 dollars an hour... and once your four year apprenticeship is done you'll be making 47 dollars an hour plus a shit ton of overtime. Also, linemen workforce is 97-98% male. Its a good job.

in any case, the amount of "how to think and reason" that you learn doing mathematics in a math major are massively helpful alongside programming. certainly don't need to waste time getting a cs degree if you're enough of an autodidact.

For one, programming is an incredibly degrading job that offers 0 job security and is the vocation most plagued by ageism by a far margin. You are not respected at any normal company.
