My grandfather was one of those "deep woods shaman" types and for as long as I can remember he's always said that when the end gets close all that we have made will be tuned out of existence like a sour note in an orchestra. Cities are reliant on the grid, agriculture, and transportation. Compounding this, consider how multicultural the largest cities throughout the west are. There will be a proliferation of conflict throughout the urban areas as peoples, ethnic groups, and religious communities struggle for resources. Three months into a conflict, much of the cities would perish.
I'm sure many of your are familiar with the work of Ted Kaczynski. What he couldn't have foreseen is that no one needs to proactively struggle against the grid. The proliferation of the technological 'progress' eventually speeds up exponentially. The result is that this acceleration is inorganic and introduces too many potentially destabilizing variables. When it all breaks down, there will only be you, what you own, and those close to you for whom you would kill and/or die. When shit hits the fan (say a currency crisis)--and this is a back of the envelope calculation-- only 10% of cities will survive. Fighting in the cities will not be factional, but a war of all versus all.
The only way any of the cities will remain fractionally functional is if the military has sufficient reserves of
1) MREs
2) silver bullion for soldiers
3) 24/7 posts at major water treatment, hydro, and food distribution facilities
4) surplus of ethnically homogeneous young single male solders with no family commitments
5) facilities where solders' families can stay under heavy guard (local sports stadiums or soccer fields)
If I was military and I was reading this, I would start to put together a contingency plan:
-a rendez-vous location for all staff familes
-stockpiling food, water and bullion for soldiers and police families
-identifying locations of key interest (hydro stations, water treatment plants)
there has to be a sufficient workaround the AWOL problem. this is avoided if soldiers families have food water warmth, and the soldiers are being compensating with something that will hold value.
Otherwise soldiers will AWOL is groups of 3-4 families in the country and bunker down. Soldiers will be placed in between their loyalties to their unit and their families. The best way to change the cost/benefit calculation is to offer service members the opportunity to satisfy both these loyalties and parse the moral calculus.
