Because the majority of higher efficiency transportation (planes, cars, etc.) use petroleum products in their construction (resins, plastic, heating for autoclaves, and metal refinement). Not to mention the majority of consumer plastics (PMM, ABS, PP, PE) are all petroleum derivatives and the only naturally derived plastic PLA is used in 3d printing and cups at national parks. And recycling for PLA is burning it.

It isn't viable with our current nigger tech and shitty politicians/leaders/managers.

For the grid, you probably still need a backup. Especially when you consider that sources like solar tend to generate peak power at the opposite times of peak demand, and storage on that scale is not easy or cheap. For the US, the logical choice is usually natural gas. We have it in cheap abundance, it's relatively clean with proper facilities (unlike that clean coal bullshit meme) and can burn on demand during peaks or emergencies. If you're lucky enough to have hydroelectric or constant wind, maybe you can around it. Probably not.

Most people could have transport and shipping needs met by electric vehicles, but sometimes higher performance and energy density is needed. You can't power a tank or airliner with Tesla batteries.

So a full ban is not viable yet despite the steep drop in renewable cost over time. But fuck coal. And probably nuclear. I like not having polluted water soil and air if I can help it.
