I feel like these kinds of situations are different. She was upset about something that happened with a friend at summercamp. Obviously it was on her mind quite a bit. Parents (if there were parents, I only see the mother mentioned, no father?) should have taken her somewhere on a long vacation where the kid could have fun and just be herself after noticing that her situation wasn't getting better (5 months of depression? What the hell were you doing during that time).
Personally if my daughter started asking that I remove the glass in her room so she doesn't kill herself, I would drop everything going on in my life and focus 100% on her until she started to get better, doing whatever it took.
