A friend and I had an argument on the point of living. His view is that the all there is in life is to enjoy now and that's it. You are dead and the only thing that matters was the fun you had. He backs his argument up with a book he read 15 years agocalled The Denial of Death by Ernest Becker. He's 30. Why he thinks at 15 he understood a deep book like that or the world around him is beyond me, but that is besides the point. My perspective is that if anyone truly believed with 100% certainty that there was no afterlife or even potential then they would just kill themselves. From my logic there would be no point to playing the game of life if you got nothing out of it in the end as all of your memories, experiences, and feelings were gone, everything and everyone you ever impacted, gone, and everything you "believed" in would end up gone too. Basically you never lived to do what he argues in the 1st place.

I wish I had something to back myself, but all I have right now is my beliefs and what is logical. I am an engineer and I could type out my logic on the beauty of god and the infinite for hours but that isn't important.

In that case it would make sense to place value on what maximally stimulates those neurons in a positive way, or what maximally propagates your genes, and suicide limits the potential of either. You have a point that in a world with no God and no soul there is fundamentally no difference between dying right now and dying far in the future though, which is a different argument.

I'm a Catholic and I also have atheist friends and family members like that, who decided their opinion on something important like religion before 20 and who have never looked deeper into it.
