As a Canadian who loves his country, I still swell with pride at the sight of the maple leaf banner.
The Red Ensign is unquestionably a better looking flag though. I get that we wanted to distance ourselves from 'Dad', but the ensign is fraught with meaning & it's beautiful to boot.
You don't understand the power this leaf wields. My ISP randomly makes me get a US flag for a few weeks now and then and my Jow Forums experience is DRASTICALLY REDUCED when I have a US flag. People liking the Red Ensign is a meme. I am not saying the leaf is very good, just that the Red Ensign isn't good or interesting except to spergs. It is actually pretty weird to look how strongly people in both the US and Canada identified with a larger English ethnicity as recently as 60 years ago or so. I live in Toronto, once considered the capital of English Canada and in its' heyday it was virtually a European city. Feels bizarre walking past centuries old Gothic churches and public buildings surrounded by glass and interracial murals.
