I’m not a Pinochet shill, but he actually wasn’t particularly brutal as far as dictators are concerned. I believe between 1,000-3,000 people were killed or disappeared under his regime; from this, it’s unclear how many of them actually deserved it (I.e. were terrorists and the such) versus how many were simple political dissidents. That’s less than 0.03% of the Chilean population. Compare this number with virtually any other two-bit, third-world dictator, and you’ll find Pinochet was really fucking merciful in comparison. Even counting those tortured (supposedly 27,000), you’ll find Pinochet’s regime interrogated less than 0.25% of his population—and it’s almost certain most of those were communist revolutionaries and terror sympathizers.
Pinochet’s economic successes are a bit overrated, but he was certainly quite tame compared to essentially any communist dictator.

Plus they picked the correct side in the Falklands war while the French were selling the Argentine government Exocet missiles, and the Americans were telling us to back down.
